Thank you for your attendance to the first Wednesday meeting of meditation class at Bohyunsa temple tonight.  For English-speaking comers, we are sorry for the lack of interpretation tonight.  But, it should be getting better as we begins the actual meditation practice from next week.  The less words, the more actual meditation practices.  As announced by Jiam Sunim tonight, she will guide us on the basics of practicing meditation including, but not limited to the purpose and right postures for next 2~3 weeks.  The individual interview may be performed to evaluate the levels of our meditation practicse.  Once we acquire these basics, then we will practice at individual level.  

Jiam sunim started with breathing meditation and vipassana practice, and she has advanced to Hwadu Meditation (refer tohttp://www.zenretreat.co.uk/hwadu_meditation.htm for information on Hwadu Meditation).  It is the type of meditation that she will eventually teach us.  However, we need to raise our concentration capacity before practicing this Hwadu meditation, so she gave us a homework to work on breathing meditation (breath counting) for next 3 weeks or so.  Start with 3 sets of full inhalation (through nose) and exhalation (through mouth) to clear our lungs.  Then, start counting your breaths (1 set = one inhalation and one exhalation through the nose).  Keep in mind not forcing your breathing.  Just follow your natural breathing patterns.  While counting your breathing, you have to restart counting your breath as number one if you got drifted away with thoughts or something no matter where you were (e.g., set number 9).  Set your goal at 10 reps 10 sets (a total of 100 breaths).  Jiam sunim emphasized to be honest to yourself upon counting the breaths.  Once you accomplish this 10 reps 10 sets, then let Sunim know about it, so that she can help to advance you to the next practice.  

The next class will be held on Wednesday, January 25th.  The meditation will start at 7PM.  Please do not be late for the meditation in order not to bother others' meditation practices. The whole meditation session is to be done by 9PM.  Once the meditation is started, silence practice should be advised throughout the whole meditation session.  Therefore, the sunim uses a bamboo clapper to give us a signal to start or to stop.  The meditation session will be started with 3 claps of the bamboo clapper.  You will hear one clap of the bamboo clapper in 30 minutes or so, then it means that it's the time for you to stretch your legs and arms.  You return to the sitting meditation when you hear one more clap of the bamboo clapper.  You may hear one claps few times during the meditation session depending upon the length of the meditation session.  When you hear 3 claps of the bamboo clapper, it means that the meditation session ends.  Then, we will have Q/A sessions. 

Practice counting your breaths until you come to the temple next week.  Don't forget what Jiam sunim told us today.  In order to do meditation efficiently, we have to have the strong will to find out what I actually is and the belief that we will also get enlightened if we follow the paths of great masters who practiced and got enlightened.  I am looking forward to seeing you again on the next Wednesday.  Thank you once again for your attendance tonight.  

There will be an evening YEBUL (prayer ceremony) at 6:30PM every day.  It will be delivered in Korean.  If you want to come earlier on next Wednesday, you are more than welcome to participate in the YEBUL.
